The theory of the “critical period” for language acquisition was first proposed by psychologist Eric Lenneberg. Lenneberg argued that children’s brains are more neurologically flexible before the age of 10, which allows them to naturally and quickly acquire skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing when learning a new language. Early childhood is one of the best times for language acquisition. Through natural interaction, children can quickly develop a sense of language and gradually master basic Chinese expressions.

By adolescence, students have a deeper understanding of language and can begin learning more complex grammatical structures. They can also apply the language in reading and writing. At this stage, students develop critical thinking skills, enabling them to analyze the cultural context and functions of language. However, they may face time pressures from academic studies, leading to divided interest in language learning.
Advantages:
• Cognitive abilities are more mature, allowing for in-depth learning of Chinese grammar and cultural content. • Critical thinking skills help students better analyze and grasp the complexities of Chinese. • Can use Chinese for more complex communication and writing tasks.
Disadvantages:
• Other academic pressures and extracurricular activities may interfere with consistent Chinese language study. • The “sensitive period” for natural language acquisition has passed, so more effort and practice are needed.
Although adults don’t have the same flexibility in language learning as young children, they can still achieve mastery through systematic study, thanks to their mature learning skills and strong motivation. Research shows that adults can rely on logical reasoning and understanding of language rules to acquire essential language skills in a relatively short time.
Advantages:
• Clear learning goals and strong motivation enable faster progress in structured learning. • Strong reasoning abilities allow adults to grasp complex language phenomena through rule-based learning. • Adults can integrate language learning with cultural exploration, forming a well-rounded understanding of the language.
Disadvantages:
• The critical period for natural language acquisition has passed, making pronunciation and intonation more challenging to master. • More time and repetition are required to solidify what has been learned.
From the perspectives of educational psychology and linguistics, the golden period for language learning is between the ages of 2 and 10. However, every age group has its own advantages and learning characteristics.
